Book Store Wins Local Readers' Honor

Larkspur-Corte Madera Patch readers cast their ballots for Book Passage as the best place to browse through books in the Twin Cities.

Wow! What a close call in the reading room.

Book Passage narrowly beat out the Corte Madera Library for the favorite book spot in the Twin Cities.

Reading might sound like a sedentary hobby, but Book Passage is one of the most active spots in town. The Corte Madera store hosts author readings and workshops almost every day.

Book Passage even partners with local chefs for Literary Luncheons. The next one is June 21 with pioneering journalist Belva Davis, the host of This Week in Northern California. She'll discuss her new memoir Never in My Wildest Dreams.

When talking bout what the library of the 21st Century should include, patrons wanted Internet access, quiet space for reading and studying, meeting space and a place for children and young families.

The Corte Madera Library has a good start on all of that — and as a bonus, it's right across the street from Peet's Coffee and Tea. The library is a popular site for young families to enjoy story time in the children's room. There are a few comfortable chairs where older adults sometimes sit down and relax with a newspaper. Then there's a meeting/study room where students meet with tutors during the school year.

The debate continues in Larkspur what should be the future of the library, whether a piece of it should remain in the historic City Hall building, or whether the whole thing should moved to the Rose Garden property, which was approved for a mixed-use community facility with library-related uses during Wednesday's Larkspur City Council meeting.

No matter where you go, remember that reading is FUNdamental.
