Grandma, Your Heart Has A Boo Boo

Lily, 4, uplifts her great grandma in the hospital after heart surgery

I just returned from visiting my mom on the east coast.  She is 87 years old and had a heart valve replacement.  Though she got through the surgery and is beginning to physically recovery very well, her spirits are not very high.

When her great grand daughter, Lily, almost 4, comes to visit her in the hospital, there is always smiles, laughter and lots of ballet.

As we entered the hospital and passed the gift shop, Lily stopped to pose for some pictures with life size Mickey and Mini Mouse balloons.  Riding the escalator and walking through the hospital becomes quite an event when you are with an energetic 4 year old.

When we entered my mom’s room, her face lit up when she saw Lily.  Lily got close to give her a kiss, then spotted lollipops. She proceeded to eat some and was excited to show me her very blue tongue.

Lily told us all about her recent visit to Amish Country in Pennsylvania.  “We sleeped at a farm…we saw the cows…my mommy milked the cows.  I held a little baby chicken…they were soooo cute!  I went swimming in the pond, and it was deep a little bit but I could stand…”

She continued, and told us about her upcoming birthday.  I said that I heard Ariel was coming to her birthday, and she said with lots of excitement, “I know that…I want to talk to her, I want to talk to her…I wanna tell her I’m gonna kiss her and hug her and I love her…”

Then it was time for ballet!  While her mom talked her through some ballet moves, Lily entertained us with her dance interpretation.  When she was finished she said, “Again?”  She performed 2 more times.  She loves ballet and loves entertaining whomever is nearby.

When she saw my mom’s scar peeking out of her hospital gown, she lovingly said, “Grandma, your heart has a boo boo.”  My mom looked at Lily and gave a faint smile.

When I asked Lily what she loved to do in her life, she thought for a long while, then said, “hhmmm….my favorite thing is….I love….YOU!”

Lily’s passion for everything in her world, reminds us to appreciate all around us, in every moment.  She says what is on her mind with confidence and lots of love.  This little spirit brought so much joy and fun to her great grandma’s hospital room.

Until next Wednesday, remember, it is all “for the love of kids…”

In joy, Marilyn
