Kids Share A Good Book With Dogs

Reading to dogs at the Larkspur Library; Prenatal yoga; Writers group at Book Passage and more events around town July 2-3.

Giving a speech or reading aloud in front of a crowd is a lot easier when the audience is attentive, friendly and huggable.

That's part of the idea behind the Marin Humane Society's Special Human-Animal Relationships Program, through which children read to dogs to develop confidence in themselves. The hope is to prevent the development of aliteracy, in which despite acquiring basic reading skills, children might dislike, or even refuse, to read.

"Because aliteracy usually can be traced to feelings of fear, shyness and embarrassment, the best way to combat the problem is to find a way for children to read in a fun and empowering environment," according to the Marin Humane Society's website.

Besides, it's just fun to read and hang out with a cute, friendly dog. Animals and children are such a natural pairing. They both live in the moment and love acknowledging each other with unconditional hugs and kisses.

The SHARE Program is coming to the Larkspur Library on Tuesday, starting at 11 a.m. Please call or drop by the library to reserve a 15-minute time.

Check the events directory for more things to do, or to post your own activities. Meanwhile, here are a few things to enjoy before the July 4th holiday:

• The Left Coast Writers group returns to Book Passage in Corte Madera at 7 p.m. Monday. The group provides literary connections, support, counsel, readings, writing tips and networking, all in a fun atmosphere. Meetings feature presentations by Bay Area literary figures. LCW hosts a variety of other activities to launch the books of members, explore publishing alternatives, and network with others in the industry.

• Looking for a prenatal yoga class? Join Janna for prenatal yoga at YogaWorks in Marin Country Mart. The class will include an introduction to yoga postures and sequences specifically for pregnancy. Please contact Janna directly for more information about prenatal yoga, mom and baby yoga, and also childbirth preparation classes at 415-898-3555, or jannabarkinyoga@gmail.com.

The Larkspur Walkers welcome you to join them on walks that start and finish at Piper Park. The group walks approximately 3 miles within an hour, and routes include some hills and easements staircases as well as level ground.  Meet at the east end of the parking lot, near the picnic area. Arrive 5 minutes early for easy warm-up exercises before the walk. If you would like to join the Larkspur Walkers, contact the Larkspur Recreation Department or come directly to Piper Park and ask for Nancy Spivey, leader of the group.
