Sock Fight

Brotherly fun and love...

Every once in awhile my doorbell will ring and there is my good friend Liz and her grandsons Kole and Kaden. Kole, 5, has his face pressed up against the door and Kaden, 15 months, is in his stroller. I live up a steep hill so visiting me is no easy task. Liz has lots of energy (so do the boys).

Since they were born, Grandma Liz has spent three days a week with them with additional babysitting and family times. Liz absolutely adores them. Liz’s son, Kirk and daughter-in-law, Karen, live down the road from her. They moved in just before the boys were born.

Liz and I have been taking walks together for the last 10 years. We are always sharing stories about our lives and she is always sharing adorable anecdotes about the boys. They have brought such joy and fun into her life.

She tells me how Kole often asks her, “Grandma, are you happy?” And with a smile onher face, as she looks in his eyes, she replies, “Yes, Kole, I am.” Kole (and Kaden) bring her a lot of happiness.

Recently Liz thought that Kole might have been upset with her for a particular situation and asked him. Kole said, “Grandma, I could never not love you, you are the best grandma in the whole world.” Liz’s heart melted.

About a week ago, Liz and I were taking a walk and talking about her husband’s recent illness. She told me that Kole had not been asking her recently if she were happy.

As of the writing of this column, it has been about 48 hours since Liz’s husband and best friend of 45 years, passed away. I have not spoken with Liz yet, however, this morning I received an e-mail — Subject: Sock Fight, Message: “This keeps me going.” (see video)

Children continually find fun and joy in every situation. They remind us that life goeson. They live in the moment. And, it feels so good when we do too.

Until next Wednesday, remember, it is all “for the love of kids…”

 In joy, Marilyn
