Welcome Earth-Guards!

New children's book series comes to life at Barnes & Nobles Book Signing

Local authors and friends, Kayla Gold and Joy Evans, have come together to create an environmentally themed children’s book series. The Earth-Guards Adventure Team is about five young super heroes and one brave horse that fight against the sloppy environmental crimes of the Dirty Guys. The first book of the series, The Case of the Poisoned Lake, was launched this past Saturday at the Barnes & Nobles Bookstore at

All ages gathered to hear portions of this suspenseful adventure story read, enjoy the theme song sung by 3 talented teens (a music CD comes with the book), watch two best friends perform the Earth-Guard Handshake, and have books signed.

Celeste, 13, and Marisa, 12, from Novato, have been best friends since Kindergarten.  They were there to showcase the Earth-Guard Handshake they were inspired to create, after hearing about the Earth Guard Adventure Team Books.

As the girls performed the handshake, which was more like a choreographed dance, the audience laughed and cheered.  Everyone joined in when they showed the handshake a second time.

They both told me, as they often spoke at the same time and finished each others thoughts and sentences, “We liked the idea (of the book) and saw it at the fair (Marin County Fair), so we decided to come up with a handshake…we liked that the book was about saving the planet…"

They continued, “We volunteer at the Marin Humane Society at their camps and have done bake sales to raise money for the animals…and at our school we are apart of a Green Team…we recycle…”

Holly, 8, was there with her mom from Santa Rosa.  Holly told me, “We came to shop…we were looking around…and we saw there was a signing at 2 o’clock and we decided to come.”  When I asked her why she bought the book, she said, “I like horses and I saw one on the front of the book…and I said, a book that has a horse in it, good thing!”

Then I asked her what part of the book signing event she enjoyed the most, she said,  “I liked when they explained the characters and the dirty guys…and I really liked the handshake!”

As stated on the Earth-Guard Adventure Team website, “The Mission of Pockets Productions and Publishing is to inspire young minds to think outside the box and find new solutions to environmental challenges around the world.”

Until next Wednesday, remember, it’s all “for the love of kids…”

In joy, Marilyn
