Solstice Raises Spirit Of The Season

Locals celebrate the changing of the season with the Winter Solstice with Pagan rituals and music.

Familiar-sounding carols and the enthusiastic beating of drums filled the Corte Madera Recreation Center on Thursday night during a celebration of the Winter Solstice, presented by the Golden Gate Center for Spiritual Living.

A packed house danced, sang and lit candles during the festivities that drew their roots from a traditional celebration that marks the start of the new solar year and the beginning of winter. The Winter Solstice is also the shortest day of the year.

An inflatable Santa Claus and a Christmas tree decorated the hall, but the celebration stuck to its more Pagan roots.
