Spend Memorial Day With Fun, Food In Larkspur, Corte Madera

Written by Kathleen Reilly

Memorial Day is a time to commemorate those who have fallen in service to the United States.

The official celebration of these heroes began in the 1860s after the Civil War, when wreaths were laid on the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers. The practice was fully recognized throughout the existing states by 1890.

So, what is the best way to honor the holiday?

For those who prefer something traditional to honor the fallen, place wreaths or flowers at war memorials or grave sites. Thank a veteran, a firefighter, or a police officer for their service.

And don't forget about the parties around town this weekend:

Try some of the tasty bites at the fourth annual Taste of Town Center in Corte Madera on Saturday, from noon to 2 p.m.

The Corte Madera Recreation Center will be transformed into a Roaring Twenties speakeasy Saturday night for some harmless gaming and fun — all for a good cause. Funds raised during the Lions Club Casino Night will help pay for the final stages of the modernization of the community center. The party starts at 7 p.m. and continues to midnight.

The annual Larkspur Flower and Food Festival takes over Magnolia Avenue on Sunday with live music from Revolver, Doc Kraft and the Marin Community Chorus. There'll be plenty of food — even a salsa tasting — and shopping to satisfy every taste.

In preparation for that first barbecue of the season, you might want to inspect your grill and refresh or purchase new backyard cooking equipment. Just make sure the coals are cooled completely after the barbecue, warns Kentfield Fire Chief Michael Hadfield

Remember, should you decide to hang a flag on Memorial Day, it should never touch the ground and it should be flown at half-staff until noon.
