Birthday Toast to Marin BrewCo

Larkspur restaurant celebrates its 22nd anniversary with $2 beers and live music.

Hoist your well-filled glasses and cheer "Happy birthday!"

Marin Brewing Company celebrates its 22nd birthday tonight with live music performed by Callafia and a featured anniversary Triple Dipsea Ale. Beer will be sold for $2 all day.

"We'll rock the night out and have a lot of fun," owner Brendan Moylan said.

The anniversary happens to coincide with the World Champion Giants' regular season opener in Los Angeles against the Dodgers. The bar at Marin Brewing Company will likely be crowded with fans cheering on their team — and perhaps tasting the new Orange and Black, a brew Moylan and his team whipped up to honor the Giants.

"I'm a beer person. I always have been," Moylan said. "Arne Johnson, our brewmaster, has a love for beer and I think you need that."

Johnson joined the American Brewers Guild in 1995, the same year he signed on with Moylan. He eventually succeeded former brewmaster Grant Johnston.

The beer has been the foundation for Moylan's success with his pubs in Larkspur and Novato. He makes 30 different beers.

Marin Brewing's India Pale Ale is a two-time gold medalist in the Best of the West competition and the Great American Beer Festival. The San Quentin Breakout Stout won gold at the Great American Beer Festival (1989), World Beer Cup (1996) and California State Fair (1997, 2001, 2002, 2005).

"I'd love to have a much bigger facility and have more tanks so I could make more beer," said Moylan, who has a distillery in Petaluma. "There's always something new on the horizon. We're always looking at different beers."

Moylan's recently-introduced Oyster Stout was popular with fans.

Of course, the food holds its own, with a solid menu featuring beer battered onion rings, hamburgers, pasta and seafood. It's a good thing 24 Hour Fitness is right next door, so patrons can work off lunch.

Marin Brewing Company has anchored the Larkspur Landing shopping center for years as a social hub for Southern Marin.

"Just the camaraderie and the relationship I have with the customers, that's what I enjoy," Moylan said. "It's a very social business. I try to help local non-profits and local groups. … This business is going to be around forever."
