Those, Those, Those and Those!

Kids enjoy making trail mix at Mimi the Sardine's Eat, Spill, Be Happy Fest

Kids love eating and many enjoy helping to prepare food. Lisa Barnes, author of two cookbooks called, The Petit Appetit Cookbook and Eat, Drink and Be Merry, was at the grand opening celebration of Mimi the Sardine in Corte Madera. She was there signing her cookbooks, talking about packing healthy lunches and helping kids make their own trail mix to take home.

She had a muffin tin filled with 12 different tasty treats. Kids would use little spoons or tongs to combine yogurt raisins, chocolate chips, coconut, raisins, cheerios, sunflower seeds and more.

Each child focused while scooping the little treats into clear cellophane bags to twist tie and take with them. They would choose each morsel carefully and drop them into the bag as their mom or Lisa held it for them.

Zane, 4, enjoyed choosing his trail mix components. When I asked him, which were his favorites, he began pointing and saying, “Those, those and those…then I also like that, and those, those, those and those…”  He soon had pointed to almost all of them! He had never made trail mix before and was looking forward to making it again at home.

Shaynabela, 3, enjoyed making her bag of trail mix, as she carefully surveyed the 12-cup muffin tin filled with fun and colorful food choices. With a mini cupcake in one hand, (provided by Eat My Kookies of Corte Madera) and little tongs in the other, she picked up one morsel at a time and dropped it into the waiting bag held by her mother.

These kids enjoyed creating their own kid friendly trail mix. This is such a wonderful and fun idea for little ones. Children like participating in activities that impact them directly and especially enjoyed making their very own trail mix combinations.

For the adults, there was wine, along with exotic olive oils from Calolea of Loma Rica. Cheeses and cheese slicers from the Nordic House fit right in at Mimi, where Pia Andersson's Swedish heritage permeates her craft. The store specializes in handmade dining ware, including tablecloths, cheese boards and lunch bags.

Until next Wednesday, remember, it’s all “for the love of kids…”
