Protest the Ross Valley Sewer Rate Increase by 6/28!
Protest the Ross Valley Sewer Rate Increase by June 28!
The Marin County Civil Grand Jury report issued last week describes the conflicts created by the Ross Valley Sanitary District #1 that have given rise to ratepayer concerns about unstable rates, lack of accountability and poor governance.
The district raised sewer rates almost 100% in 2008 and is now proposing a 60% rate increase three years later for the same reasons stated on the 2008 increase notice.
To quote the title of the County Civil Grand Jury report issued last week: "NOT AGAIN?"

The board has not fully explained to the public what has been done with the 2008 rate increase money and why a 60% rate increase is necessary 3 years after doubling rates.
Ratepayers fear the money has been directed away from sewer repairs, to growing a large expensive organization, not fixing the pipes as described in the district's adopted capital improvement plan.

A change in direction is needed for the board and management, toward cooperation and consensus, not conflict with adjacent agencies.
A true cost study of sharing sewer services should be conducted by central Marin sewer agencies.
I encourage property owners to consider these factors, send a signal for change and file a written protest to the proposed rate increase.
The last day to protest the proposed rate increase is tomorrow June 28.
