Stranded Kayaker Might Have Been Trying To Steal Boat

Morning commute gets exciting on the San Francisco Bay

A Golden Gate Ferry crew rescued a female kayaker from the San Francisco Bay on Wednesday morning, Golden Gate Bridge District spokeswoman Mary Currie said.

Ferry crews have worked with the U.S. Coast Guard to train for such rescues, though they are not common. Golden Gate Ferry pilot John Beard said crews do have to watch for stranded kayakers and boaters during their runs across the bay.

The Marin Independent Journal reported a Golden Gate commute ferry yesterday morning picked up a woman stranded overnight on a channel marker near Larkspur.

The woman paddled her kayak out of Sausalito Tuesday afternoon and somehow drifted north, said Mary Currie, a Golden Gate Ferry spokeswoman.

The woman then clung onto "channel marker 2," a triangular floating device with a platform about two miles offshore that helps ferry operators navigate the Larkspur channel. Her kayak was nearby.

Fairfax's Steve Katz, who was on the Mendocino, the 8:20 a.m. ferry, that rescued the woman, reported the incident on twitter and snapped the picture at right.

But, that's not the end of the story.

The woman's tale of looking for a missing kayak didn't make sense to police, according to ABC News. Police now suspect the woman may have been trying to steal a small boat when she got stuck.
