Marin Residents Join Labor Rally

Demonstrators cross the bay to support the fight for labor on the anniversary of the assassination of Rev. King.

Dozens of Marin residents demonstrated at the Larkspur Landing Ferry terminal as a part of the national We Are One rallies Monday, then took the ferry to San Francisco to join thousands of union members, civic and faith-based groups for a rally at the Federal Reserve.

National rally organizers claimed labor is under attack in the United States, citing recent Republican efforts to limit collective bargaining by public employees in Wisconsin and Ohio. Organizers tied the rallies to the anniversary of the assassination of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., who was shot in Memphis on April 4, 1968 as he was supporting striking sanitation workers.

"The message, in Marin, and across the nation is clear: we will stand up to protect the rights Dr. King gave his life for," according to a message from Pat Johnstone. "We want to be part of the solution, but workers and the middle class cannot carry the burden alone. It's time to share the sacrifice."
