Recipe: Peach Salsa

Try some peach salsa to give your pork roast a new twist.

Grapes, blueberries, nectarines, apricots ... and peaches — peaches for me, peaches for you.

You don't have to live in Georgia to appreciate peaches. There are so many wonderful things to do with that fuzzy stone fruit: Peach cobbler, peach pie, peach preserves, peach ice cream ... MMMmmm!

You'll start to find plenty of fresh fruits at the farmers markets around town. Check out the Larkspur farmers market at Marin Country Mart every Saturday, from 9 a.m. to noon, and the Corte Madera farmers market at the Town Center every Wednesday, from noon to 5 p.m.

Shopping for fruits at the local market this week, I was up to my navel in oranges, pluots and other fruits. Most of them were priced competitively with the organic fruit at the grocery store. It's easy to go overboard buying fruits, but you've got to make sure you can use them before they start to rot on your kitchen counter.

If you're looking for a refreshing taste, here's one simple way to use those peaches:

Peach Salsa

Ingredients

1 cup chopped peaches

1 sweet red pepper, seeded and coarsely chopped

1/2 cup chopped red onion

1 to 2 jalapeño chilies, seeded and finely chopped

3 Tbs. chopped fresh cilantro or mint

1 tsp. grated lime zest

2 Tbs. fresh lime juice

Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste  

Preparation: In a bowl, combine the peaches, bell pepper, onion, chilies, cilantro, lime zest and lime juice and toss gently to mix. Season with salt and pepper. Let stand at room temperature for at least 20 minutes. Serve on tacos or alongside grilled meats or fish.
