Why Your Trip To The Giants Game Could Cost You More

The new ticketing system for the ballpark ferry from the Larkspur Terminal adds a $2 roundtrip fee.

The Larkspur Ferry Terminal fills up fast on normal weekdays, but with the San Francisco Giants about to throw out the first pitch in their home opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates, finding a place to park could be even more of headache.

There's another pain for fans catching the Golden Gate Ferry to AT&T Park as the system to buy tickets has become harder to navigate.

"The Giants ferry ticket system isn't as streamlines as before," admitted Mary Currie, spokesperson for the Golden Gate Bridge District.

When the district phased out its ticket agents at the terminal, according to Currie, the district had to find a new ticketing system to replace the one it had used for the past 11 years.

The district moved to Clipper transit cards and vending machines that allow people to buy ferry tickets that are good for 90 days. Those passes and tickets are good for the ballpark ferry, but they leave the district without a way of knowing when the ferry's capacity has been reached.

There is a glitch in the new system: The district can't track ballpark ferry ticket purchases made with Clipper cards or the new vending machines. In order to prevent overselling the ferry, the district added a reservation system.

Riders are being asked to go online and make a reservation for $1 each way, in addition to the regular round-trip fares, which will be raised to $18 on July 1.

Geez, it seems like everything has some sort of service/processing fee these days. For the Giants game, I'm better off staying home and watching it on tv and NOT paying any service/processing fee.
