REVIEW OF THE WEEK:

Gangster Squad
I’ll admit, I'm a sucker when it comes to films that take place between the 20’s and the 50’s involving detectives and gangsters of that period. Films that come to mind such as The Untouchables, Public Enemies, and the show Boardwalk Empire. So when something like that comes along, I have to give it a look. Gangster Squad fits in the mold of many period piece gangster flicks with an all-star cast including Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Emma Stone, Giovanni Ribisi, Nick Nolte, Robert Patrick, and Sean Penn chewing up every scene as gangster Mickey Cohen. So Gangster Squad doesn’t even come close to the aforementioned films or one of the best films about seedy Los Angeles; L.A. Confidential, but it's worth a look. Yes, it may be all style, and there’s plenty of it, maybe not historically accurate, but with actors who look like they’re having a lot of fun in their roles (especially Sean Penn), and a solid 1940’s soundtrack (Peggy Lee and Louis Prima’s “Bless You” is extremely catchy), plus keep in mind, don’t expect Oscar quality work here, even with the solid cast, just expect a fun ride with enough action and humor to keep one’s interest.
