85-Year-Old Scammed Out Of $2,300

Scary stories of fraud, pumpkin tossing and burglary reported to the Twin Cities Police, Oct. 19-25.

• A resident in the 30 block of Staghound Passage reported she answered an ad on "Craig’s List" and she was given a check from the person running the ad. When she tried to cash the check, Western Union advised the check was fraudulent. Total loss was $2,400. A report was taken to document the Fraud and there is possible follow-up pending.

• A woman called advising she is calling on behalf of her mother, who is 85 years old, and a resident of the 40 block of Toyon Court. She reported that someone called her mother this morning and pretended to be her grandson, saying he is in jail and needed money. Her mother took $2,300 out of the bank and sent it via Western Union to Mexico. A report was taken to document the Fraud.

• A resident in the 30 block of Murray Avenue reported a female subject called stating she is his granddaughter and she had been involved in a drunken driving accident. She said she now is in jail in Cancun and requested he send her $3,000 immediately. He didn't give her any personal information or send any money. Documentation was provided for the attempted fraud.

• A resident in the 10 block of Hazel Avenue reported she received a call from a female subject stating she is her granddaughter and she is in jail at the Civic Center in San Rafael. The caller told her the public defender would be giving her a call. Immediately after the she hung up, she received a call from a male subject stating he is with the Public Defender's Office and that her granddaughter had been in a DUI accident. After that conversation, she received another call from a subject who also stated he was with the Public Defender's Office and that she needed to send $4,200 via Western Union to cover costs of the accident and he provided her with the name of a subject to send it to. She sent the money. A report was taken to document the fraud and there is possible further investigation pending.

• A resident of the 100 block of Sandpiper Circle reported she received a call from a female subject who stated she is with the United States Legal Department and she was calling to confirm her personal information. The caller stated she owed $800. The caller had her full name, address, and Social Security Number. The Officer was able to determine that this was a scam and there was no loss. The incident was documented.

• A resident in the 10 block of Chickasaw Court reported a pumpkin was thrown at the side of her house causing a hole in the wall. Two pumpkins were thrown and one hit the house, causing damage. A report taken to document the vandalism.

• Loss Prevention Agents for Macy’s, located in the Village Shopping Center, reported they have a subject in custody for the theft of merchandise. A Mill Valley woman was arrested for Shoplifting and released on a citation for the theft of $390 in merchandise.

• Pursuant to being contacted on foot in the area of the DMV, 75 Tamal Vista Boulevard, a San Rafael man was arrested for public intoxication and booked into the Marin County Jail.

• A resident in the 10 block of Alta Way reported that her husband's unlocked pickup had been entered. Taken were an iPad and charger valued at $800. A report was taken to document the theft.

• A resident in the 300 block of West Baltimore Avenue reported her two vehicles had been entered. Both vehicles had been left open and unlocked. Taken was approximately $85 in cash between the two vehicles. Documentation was provided for the theft.

• A resident in the 10 block of Ward Street reported that her garage had been entered. Taken were an earthquake preparedness kit, two bicycles, a North Face jacket, vest and hiking boots. Also taken were a sleeping bag, tent, and a picnic basket containing linens and utensils. The loss is estimated at between $6,000 - $7,000. A Residential Burglary report was taken.

• Pursuant to a traffic stop in the area of Magnolia Avenue and College Court, a Sebastopol man was arrested for Driving While Under the Influence of Alcohol. He was booked into the Marin County Jail.

• A resident in the 120 block of Hawthorne Avenue reported the theft of a bicycle from the area of their residence. The bicycle is a men's 18 speed silver Rocky Mountain full suspension mountain bike, valued at $3,500. A report was taken to document the theft.

• Marin Country Day School, located at 5221 Paradise Drive, reported a 4th grade classroom was entered during the night and computers were taken. The rear door to the classroom had been pried open. Eighteen Macbook Pro laptop computers were taken for an approximate loss of $27,000. This was the second incident at the school in a week. Police suspect this is the work of the same group of individuals who have stolen computers from other schools in Marin County recently. Further investigation pending.

• A Santa Monica resident reported, via CHP transfer of a cellular 9-1-1 call, he was just assaulted and the other subject had fled in a vehicle. He reported that the subject had been following him for a long time, and when he parked, the subject began verbally accosting him over a driving maneuver. As he turned to walk away, the subject slammed his head with a case he had been carrying and then fled in a vehicle. An Assault and Battery report was taken to document the incident.

• A student at Redwood High School reported the theft of his white iPhone 4, taken from a locker in the football locker room. A Commercial Burglary report was taken to document the theft.

• Pursuant to a traffic stop on Tamalpais Drive at Chapman Avenue, a Corte Madera woman was arrested for Driving While Under the Influence of Alcohol. She was booked at the Marin County Jail.

• A resident in the 40 block of Laderman Lane reported damage to a vehicle parked near their residence. The back window had been smashed and glass is on the roadway. The vehicle's owner was located and the damage was determined to be new. The vehicle had been entered and was ransacked, but nothing appeared to have been taken. An Auto Burglary report was taken to document the incident.

• A resident of the 10 block of Laderman Lane reported the back windows to both of her Honda Accords were broken out during the night. There was no entry made and no theft or loss. The vandalism was documented.

• A resident in the 1900 building of Lincoln Village Circle reported the theft of two boxes of children's toys from the residence. She said she has been in the process of moving and things have been boxed up. She did not know who could have taken the boxes as no one has had access to her apartment. There were no signs of forced entry. Documentation was provided for the theft.

• Pursuant to receiving a Fraud report from the San Francisco Police Department, a San Francisco resident reported that her Visa credit card number was used at several locations in Marin County, including in Larkspur and Corte Madera. There is no suspect information available in the SFPD report. A Fraud report was taken and there is possible follow-up investigation pending.

• A resident of the 500 block of Redwood Avenue reported someone used her American Express card, spending $2,000, in the Southern California area. An Identity Theft report was taken and will be forwarded to the appropriate Law Enforcement agency where the theft occurred.

• A Greenbrae resident reported that she had gone on a trip and left her vehicle parked in the lot at the Marin Airporter. When she returned, she discovered her vehicle had been scratched on the left side front passenger door. Damage is estimated at approximately $500-$800. The Vandalism was documented.

• Pursuant to being contacted at the Twin Cities Police Station, a Larkspur woman was arrested on an outstanding Mendocino County Warrant. She was booked at the Marin County Jail.

• A resident in the 300 block of West Baltimore Avenue reported the theft of her brand new bicycle, a white women's 24 speed Marin Bear Creek, valued at $699, from the area of her residence. Also taken was a white helmet with a design in green and brown, valued at $35. A report was taken to document the theft.

• A San Rafael resident reported that he had parked and locked his vehicle in the parking lot at the Golden Gate Ferry Terminal. When he returned, his vehicle had been stolen from the lot. An Auto Theft report was taken and the vehicle was entered into the Stolen Vehicle System.

• A Greenbrae resident reported that while his vehicle was parked in the lot at the Golden Gate Ferry Terminal, his bicycle was taken from the rack on the vehicle. The bicycle is a 21 speed GTX4 men's bike, black and yellow with an REI sticker on the middle bar, valued at $500. Documentation was provided for the theft.

• Pursuant to a traffic stop in the area of Remillard Park on East Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, a Berkeley woman was arrested for Displaying False Tags on her vehicle and released on a citation.

During this one week time period, Twin Cities Police had 330 calls for service. This included one call related to an accident with minor injuries, two hit and run accidents and seven property damage only accidents. There was one auto burglary, two commercial burglaries and one residential burglary. There were two calls related to Driving while Intoxicated, resulting in two arrests.
