Dangers Lurking Outside Your Gym

Twin Cities Police Log March 14-20: Three cars are broken into near the Bay Club at the Town Center and another car is broken into near 24 Hour Fitness in Larkspur. Use our pinpoint map to see where crimes have been reported in the Twin Cities.

Going to the gym for a workout? Well, while you're hard at work on the treadmill, someone else could be hard at work on your car. Twin Cities Police received separate reports from three people who said thieves broke into their cars, which were parked near the Bay Club at the Corte Madera Town Center.

Another victim reported her car was broken into while she was parked near the 24 Hour Fitness in Marin Country Mart in Larkspur. There have been several similar reports in recent weeks.

The reports do not specifically state that the victims were in the gym at the time of the break-ins.

• A Kentfield resident reported her vehicle was broken into while parked in the area of the Bay Club, located in the Corte Madera Town Center. The passenger side front window was broken and her purse was taken from under the seat. An Auto Burglary report was taken to document the incident.

• A Ross resident reported that while her vehicle was parked in the area of the Bay Club, located in the Corte Madera Town Center, it was broken into via a window being smashed. Her purse was stolen and a credit card has already been used. An Auto Burglary report was taken and there is follow-up pending.

• A Mill Valley resident reported that while her vehicle was parked in the area of the Bay Club, located in the Corte Madera Town Center, her purse was taken from the trunk of her car. She said that the driver's window was smashed to gain entry to the car, and then the trunk release was used to open the trunk. The purse contained her cell phone, a wallet with identification and other miscellaneous contents and $200. An Auto Burglary report was taken.

• A Mill Valley resident reported her vehicle was broken into while it was parked in the area of the 24 Hour Fitness club, located in the Marin Country Mart shopping center. Taken was a camera valued at $1,000. The passenger window was broken in order to make entry. An Auto Burglary report was taken.

• A resident of the 20 block of Liberty Street reported a group of 3-4 juveniles has been riding around the neighborhood, ringing doorbells and throwing things at houses (there was a similar report received earlier in the evening from another residence in the same area). He stated he chased the group and they dropped their bicycles, but then came back and apologized, so he returned the bikes. However, when he left, they threw something against his house. The area was checked and the group of juveniles was located at the end of William Avenue. Two Corte Madera juvenile males and a Larkspur juvenile male were reprimanded and released. The parents of the juveniles were notified.

• A resident in the 30 block of Drakes Way reported via 9-1-1 that her boyfriend had just beaten her up. Officers responded and contacted the victim’s mother who reported the involved parties had left. The interior of the residence was checked and no one was located inside, but signs of an altercation were located. The victim was later located at her place of work. A Domestic Battery report was taken and an APB was broadcast for the arrest of the involved subject. The subject was later located at the residence. A Larkspur man was arrested for Domestic Battery and booked into the Marin County Jail.

• A resident of the 140 block of Stetson Avenue reported mail was stolen from his mailbox and now checks have been forged and used against his account. A Fraud report was taken and there may be further investigation pending.

• A resident of the 120 block of Locust Avenue reported that he was the victim of identity theft. He advised that money had been transferred out of one of his bank accounts. A report has already been made with the bank. A Fraud report was taken and there is possible follow-up pending.

• A Loss Prevention Agent for Nordstrom, located in the Village Shopping Center, reported they had a female in custody for the theft of $805 of merchandise. A Tiburon female was arrested for shoplifting. She was released on a citation at the scene.

• A Security Officer for the Corte Madera Town Center reported a subject who appeared to be sleeping in his truck while parked in a loading zone and who possibly was intoxicated. Upon TCPA Officers contacting the subject, he grabbed the Officer's arm and tried to drive away. A San Rafael man was arrested for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, Resisting Arrest, and Battery on a Peace Officer. He was booked at the Marin County Jail following medical clearance at the Marin General Hospital Emergency Room.

• A resident of the 800 block of Via Casitas reported his locked vehicle was broken into. Computer and camera equipment were stolen from the trunk. The loss is approximately $1,500. An Auto Burglary report was taken and there is further investigation pending.

• A resident of the 400 block of Via Hidalgo reported he found all the doors to his vehicle open five minutes ago and it appears some Chanel sunglasses, two iPods, a pair of Ugg boots, an amplifier kit and some perfume are missing. The loss is estimated at $975. A Grand Theft from Auto report was taken.

• The Richmond Police Department reported they recovered a vehicle reported stolen to TCPA on March 9, 2012, from the area of the 1100 block of South Eliseo Drive. The vehicle had minor stripping, but wasn't burned and no plates were missing. There was no one in custody. The owner of the vehicle was notified and it was cleared from the Stolen Vehicle System.

• The AT&T Store, located in the Corte Madera Town Center, reported that a display phone was stolen. The phone is worth approximately $550. A Theft report was taken.

• A resident of the 100 block of Corte Oriental reported an older female in a Mercedes with the interior lights on. She advised it appeared the woman was sleeping. A Greenbrae woman was located and arrested for Public Intoxication. She was transported to the Helen Vine center for detoxification.

• A resident of the 10 block of Wildflower Drive reported his vehicle was stolen from the area of his residence. A Vehicle Theft report was taken and the vehicle was entered into the Stolen Vehicle System.

• A resident of the 20 block of Millard Road reported that her two unlocked cars were entered while they were parked in her unlocked garage. Taken were iPod, prescription sunglasses a gym bag with clothing in it and a gym bag with swimming items. An Auto Burglary report was taken.

• A Greenbrae resident reported via 9-1-1 that his wife came home and found the bathroom window was open and believed someone may have entered the residence. Items had been moved around in the bathroom. Officers responded and checked the residence for someone inside with negative results. At the time of the report, it did not appear that anything had been taken. A Residential Burglary report was taken.

• An employee of the Corte Madera Recreation Center, located at 498 Tamalpais Drive, reported an interior door and lock had been pried. Nothing appears missing. A report was taken to document the vandalism.

• A resident of the 600 block of Via Casitas reported the theft of a briefcase and money from unlocked vehicle which had been parked in the area of her residence. Documentation was provided for the theft.

• A resident of the 200 block of Via Casitas reported his vehicle had been entered. Entry was gained via a jimmied lock. Electronic equipment, a Swiss army knife and CD's in a pouch were taken. Documentation was provided for the theft.

• A San Rafael resident reported that while her vehicle was parked in the area of Jo-Ann Fabrics, located at 245 Tamal Vista Blvd., someone smashed her car's driver's window to access the trunk. A purse and bag of clothing were taken. An Auto Burglary report was taken.

• An employee of a business in the 5500 block of Paradise Drive reported she had her purse hanging on a chair and her wallet was stolen from her purse. A check, identification and credit cards were taken. A credit card has already been used. A report was taken to document the theft.

• A resident of the 2100 building of Lincoln Village Circle reported the theft of his rear window from his soft top while the vehicle was parked in the lot. The vehicle was unlocked. Documentation was provided for the theft.

• A Mill Valley resident reported that her vehicle was broken into while it was parked in the area of Bed, Bath and Beyond, located in the Marin Country Mart Shopping Center, via the window being smashed. A laptop computer and blank business checks were taken for a loss of approximately $500. An Auto Burglary report was taken.

During this one week time period, Twin Cities Police had 342 calls for service. This included one call related to an accident with minor injuries, one hit and run accident and eight property damage only accidents. There were nine auto burglaries and one residential burglary. There was one call related to Driving while Intoxicated, resulting in one arrest.
