Fire Near the Village at Corte Madera Injures One

By Bay City News Service

Firefighters in Marin County battled a vegetation fire near The Village at Corte Madera shopping center overnight that may have started at a homeless encampment, a fire chief said.

Shortly after midnight, firefighters received word that a fire was burning off of Redwood Highway in Larkspur.

Crews arrived and found that the roughly one-acre blaze was actually burning in the Corte Madera Marsh Ecological Reserve, just northeast of The Village, San Rafael Fire Chief Chris Gray said.

Engine companies from Corte Madera, Larkspur, Kentfield and San Rafael battled the blaze and brought the flames under control. It charred about two acres, but no structures burned.

A man who appeared to have been living or camping in the area with several other people and their dogs suffered burns to both of his arms and was taken to Marin General Hospital, Gray said.

Twin Cities police are interviewing four people who were with the burn victim at the time of the fire, Gray said.

He said it appears the fire may have been caused by smoking.
