Kentfield Blaze Likely Caused by Hot Coals

Investigators have determined Monday's fire that damaged a house in Kent Woodlands was caused by warm coals left in a barbecue overnight.

The fire started with a barbecue left in a covered breezeway, according to Kentfield Fire Chief Michael Hadfield, who said the coals in the barbecue were likely not thoroughly extinguished. A fire kicked up again in the barbecue and spread to some nearby plastic bins and the roof over the breezeway.

When fire crews arrived on the scene at about 2:30 a.m., they found flames coming out of the attic and the garage. Crews from Larkspur, Corte Madera and San Rafael assisted. The blaze was extinguished within half an hour, according to reports.

"It's a tragedy. The family's been there for 60 years," Hadfield said.

The fire likely caused $500,000-$750,000 in damage. There were no reports of injuries.

"We should take this as a warning. We're already weeks ahead of what's expected to be a very active fire season," Hadfield said. "Homeowners need to be prepared and they need to be aware."
