Firefighters from Larkspur, San Rafael and Marinwood spent most of Thursday at Third Street and Grand Avenue in San Rafael raising funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s annual Fill the Boot campaign.

The firefighters have been supporting the cause since 1954, according to San Rafael Fire Chief Chris Gray.

Volunteers raised more than $12,000 at that one location Thursday, according to Larkspur firefighter Dennis Rutkowski. He and other firefighters will be back with the boot in Tiburon and Sausalito on Sunday as they try to reach their $50,000 goal for the campaign.

"This event is a lot of fun and it raies a lot of money for a good cause," Rutkowski said. "It helps local families here. It helps pay for clinical trials for families and sends kids to summer camp. It also helps pay for expensive medical equipment that patients need."
