Motorcyclist Catapulted Off Freeway Overpass, Lands on Second Street

CHP closed Second Street after a motorcyclist fell from the overpass on to the sidewalk Wednesday afternoon.

An unidentified motorcyclist was transported to Marin General Hospital after being ejected off his vehicle from a freeway overpass and landing on the sidewalk of Second Street in San Rafael.

California Highway Patrol are still investigating the incident and do not have all the details, according to officer Dave Jones.

At approximately 3:20 p.m. the motorcyclist lost control of his vehicle while traveling northbound on US-101. He swerved and hit the center divider and was ejected off the overpass and landed on Second Street at Hetherton, Jones said.

The man, who is described as a white male in his 30s, was traveling with a dog in a pouch on the motorcycle. The dog hit the center divider with the man, and was killed by the impact or by an oncoming car, Jones said.

Police closed off on Second Street at Hetherton, but reopened the right lanes.

"We hope to be opening all lanes soon, due to rush hour traffic," San Rafael police spokeswoman Margo Rorhbacher said.
