Many commuters affected by the BART strike are continuing to turn to ferry service to get across the Bay.

In Marin, which has had only a minor impact from the strike, the Golden Gate Ferry out of Larkspur recorded 358 more passengers during the morning commute on Tuesday compared to the previous Tuesday.

But traffic took a dip on Wednesday as Larkspur ferry ridership this morning was down from last Wednesday, possibly due to people taking the day off in advance of the Fourth of July holiday, district officials said.

The San Francisco Bay Ferry has seen a much more marked spike in ridership. On Tuesday, the San Francisco Bay Ferry, which operates between San Francisco and Oakland, Alameda and Vallejo, again saw three times its regular ridership, ferry spokesman Ernest Sanchez said.

Systemwide, there were roughly 19,600 ferry riders on Tuesday and about 18,000 on Monday, Sanchez said. Typically, the ferry service carries about 6,000 riders a day, Sanchez said.

To accommodate the added passengers, the ferry system is operating 11 vessels instead of its usual eight, he said.

On the Fourth of July holiday, the ferries will be on a reduced holiday schedule even if the strike is still going on, Sanchez said.
