Video Op-Ed: Make Tam Junction Safer for Bicyclists

Parents say students commuting to and from Tam Valley by bicycle face dangerous conditions in and around busy Tam Junction intersection. They're asking Caltrans and other agencies to do more.

Despite the recent momentum behind two long-delayed Tam Valley infrastructure projects - a and a - Tam Valley parents say much more is needed to make the area safe for children, particularly those commuting to and from school by bicycle.

Longtime bike and pedestrian activist Kathy McLeod has joined with other parents in the neighborhood to form the Tam Valley Vision Group (TVVG), an organization focused on lobbying a range of agencies, from Marin County Public Works to Caltrans and the , to get behind suggested changes to the area, specifically Tam Junction. In this video op-ed, McLeod describes the unsafe conditions.

Great work, Kathy! Tam Junction, and really all of Tam Valley's Shoreline Highway route, is in desperate need of a solid complete streets policy. I typically hate to link-drop, but the work you're doing fits hand-in-glove with an advocacy group I know: http://www.completestreets.org/. I hope these changes happen!

Updates! PG&E is removing the utility pole and part of the bus zone was painted red. We're approved for crossing guards!! and a light will be installed at Flamingo and Gibson! Thanks to Supervisor Kate Sears and her Aide, Maureen Parton and the MCBC. Also to our Mill Valley and Sausalito friends for going to bat for us and speaking up at the Thursday night TAM board meeting! I hear Supervisor Steve Kinsey spoke accurately and well about this problem too. The crossing guard "quick fix" will certainly improve children's safety encourage biking and walking to school. Further study will be needed to achieve the "Complete Streets" for Shoreline so I hope that will be the next action taken.

Hi David and ALL! Thanks for your comments you made here on the Mill Valley Patch a year ago to the day of this up coming meeting. We are asking that bicycling and transit be added to an ADA and pedestrian study that Caltrans is doing in Tam Junction. We need to show support as a group. Call me if you are interested in participating and I'll add you to our list. 415-686-3805 or email me at komcleod@wheelescape.com Kathy
