Watch Out For Students!

Safety measures for local schools.

We see it every day and probably even done it a few times: busy, even distracted commuters zipping through crosswalks, narrowly avoiding pedestrians.

With school back in session, the crossing guards are back on duty. The challenge during the summer was finding the best way to distribute funds and personnel to cover all the key school crossings.

"Enough crossing guards? We can never have enough, but I think we have a safe situation," Larkspur-Corte Madera School District Superintendent Valerie Pitts said.

The crosswalk near Tam Racquet Club on Doherty Drive was ranked second by the Transportation Authority of Marin in a list of locations that need crossing guards.

The TAM board suggested placing a crossing guard near Neil Cummins Elementary School, but Corte Madera Director of Public Works Barry Hogue suggested the crosswalk at Tamalpais Drive and Eastman Avenue was more in need of a physical presence.

Pitts encourages families to carpool to school and to take advantage of the Safe Routes to School program. She'd also like to see more students riding their bikes to school.

Other areas in the Top 30 included: Hickory Avenue near Mohawk in Corte Madera; College Avenue and Stadium Way in Kentfield; and Doherty Drive at Piper Park in Larkspur.
