Dziachan, Bacchus Help Lift Redwood to Track Title

The Giants' girls team uses incredible depth to lead the way at the MCAL Championships, while Zachary Cooperband and Sam Perrella stand out among the boys.

Despite getting just two first-place performances, the Redwood High girls track and field team used fabulous depth to win the team title Saturday at the Marin County Athletic League Championships at Novato High.

The Redwood boys took home third place.

Mackenzie Dziachan (400 meters, 58.07) and Alexandra Bacchus (triple jump, 34-5) were individual champions for the Redwood girls, who qualified 11 girls and two relay teams to the North Coast Section Redwood Empire Championships this weekend at Rancho Cotate High.

Five Redwood girls had second-place finishes, including Dziachan (200, 26.03) and Kathleen Killeen, who had a pair (1,600, 5:18.87; 3,200, 11:37.66). Also finishing second for the Giants were Lindsay Hendrickson (triple jump, 33-3 ½), Julia Purcell (discus, 91-7 ½) and Ariel Farrar (pole vault, 10-0).

Hendrickson (third in the long jump, 16-4 ¼) and Purcell (fourth in the shot put, 30-9) also qualified for the Redwood Empire meet in a second event.

Dziachan also competed on both Redwood relay teams. The 4x100 quartet of  Sami Bartlett, Annie Osborn, Hendrickson and Dziachan clocked a 51.57, good for fourth place. The team of  Natalie Tallerico, Bartlett, Claire Hillman and Dziachan took third in the 4x400 in a time of 4:19.24.

Also headed to Rancho Cotate representing Redwood in individual events are: Tallerico (third in the 800, 2:23.11), Hillman (fourth in the 800, 2:30.29; fourth in the 1,600, 5:27.35), Claire Lyons (fourth in the high jump, 4-10), Lily Goldwater (fifth in the 1,600, 5:28.40; fourth in the 3,200, 12:16.11) and Xinhua Eynon (sixth in the pole vault, 8-6).

The girls finished with 113 1/3 points, well ahead of second-place Tam (98).

Zachary Cooperband and Sam Perrella were the top performers among the Redwood boys.

Cooperband placed first in the long jump (20-6 ¾), sixth in the 100 (11.62) and fourth in the 200 (23.49). Perrella recorded a second of seconds – in the shot put (53-3) and discus (144-11).

Cooperband also anchored the Giants’ 4x100 relay team to second place (44.16). The others on the team were LJ Adams, Matt Healy and Michael Simmonds.

Redwood’s 4x400 relay team placed fifth (3:37.02).

Healy was among six other Giants earning an invitation to this weekend’s NCS meet. He placed fourth in the 400 (52.81).

Others headed north Saturday will be: Joe Balmain (third in the high jump, 5-10), Tommy Warfel (fifth in the 800, 2:02.67; third in the 1,600, 4:24.36), Fred Huxham (fifth in the 1,600, 4:26.45; third in the 3,200, 9:49.45), Kyle Ryan (sixth in the 1,600, 4:28.76), Jackson Cooney (sixth in the pole vault, 10-0) and Pierre Hicks (sixth in the triple jump, 38-9 ¾).

The boys totaled 70 points. Terra Linda won the team title with 113 points.
