Greenbrae Man Has A Love For The Classics

Vintage automobiles take the spotlight during the CSRG race this weekend.

Their glory days may be past, but these cars aren't ready to be retired.

The Classic Sports Racing Group celebrates vintage MGs as it kicks off its 44th season at Infineon Raceway this weekend. The event will feature open practice today, with vintage racing slated for the 12-turn, 2.52-mile road course on Saturday and Sunday.

"It's the camaraderie that I really enjoy," said Greenbrae's Richard Ruff, who will be inspecting the cars this weekend. A longtime CSRG driver, Ruff has parked his 1959 Lotus Eleven this year, but just can't seem to give up the lifestyle.

The weekend will also feature the MG West Coast Reunion with nearly 100 MGs featured in races, parades and charity track rides.

"One of the best parts of the weekend is people have the opportunity to take a ride around the course in one of the cars. In just about every case, they come back with a smile on their faces," Ruff said. "It's a great time."

More than 250 vintage race cars in total from the 1930s to 1970s will challenge the road course over the weekend. Some of the featured groups include Ferrari, Aston-Martin, Porsche, Shelby 350GT, Corvette and Jaguar.

"With these old cars, you've got to take care of everything. If you let it just sit, things will go bad," said Sonoma's Bud DeLauer, who will be driving a dark blue 1967 Triumph Spitfire around the Sonoma road course. "This is a real commitment."

Gates open at 8 a.m. each day. Admission is $25 each day or $40 for a weekend pass. Children 12 and under are admitted free. A major portion of ticket sales from the event weekend will benefit Rotary Central Marin Foundation and the Sonoma Chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities, the charitable arm of Infineon Raceway.
