It'll be Peanuts and Quackerjack at Pacifics Games

The San Rafael Pacifics baseball team recently unveiled its team mascot, a 7-foot-tall male duck called Sir Francis the Drake.

The Pacific might be a smaller pond than we originally thought, because a duck just flew in to San Rafael.

A 7-foot-tall drake, who dons an Elizabethan collar and wields a sword or a baseball bat, depending on his mood.

The mallard was unveiled as minor league baseball team the Pacifics new mascot on a recent morning at Parkside Children’s Center. Sir Francis the Drake is a swashbuckling, male duck based on the 16th Century Elizabethan naval commander, Sir Francis Drake.

The mascot was the brainchild of Mike Shapiro, Pacifics team president and general manager, who was determined to create a mascot that was child-friendly, fun-loving and clever.

“Our hope is that Sir Francis becomes synonymous with the Pacifics and with our community,” Shapiro said.

The team partnered with in San Rafael to help bring the duck to life. A Pacifics sash crosses the drake’s chest, and his over-sized webbed feet were fitted with custom black baseball shoes. The words “Love the Drake,” adorns the back of the cape, to symbolize the partnership.

The duck will flap his way across Marin County in the next few weeks, visiting local schools, non-profit organizations, children’s centers, hospitals and senior communities.

“Now with Sir Francis on board, these visits will be even more fun,” Shapiro said.
