Mareno Doubles Up Novato in Giants' Win

Redwood star records a 19-point, 14-rebound double-double as the Giants run away from the Hornets to move over .500 in MCAL boys basketball play.

FRIDAY'S SCORE: 45, Novato 36.

REDWOOD'S RECORD: 10-7 overall, 3-2 in MCAL.

GAME SUMMARY: Redwood junior recovered from a bout of the flu with a dominating effort against Novato. Mareno led all players with 19 points and 14 rebounds.

In a game in which baskets didn't come easy, the Giants used their size and strength to overcome 1-for-14 shooting from beyond the arc to win their third Marin County Athletic League game of the season.

The Giants' only 3-point basket came in the opening minute of the game when senior opened the scoring from the left side of the key.

After falling behind early, the Giants rallied to take a 9-6 lead, with Drewry accounting for five points and fellow senior TJ Gilberg adding four more. Mareno powered the Giants in the second period and Redwood went into the break with a 20-12 lead.

In the second half, the teams traded baskets, but the Hornets never got closer than nine points after the Giants broke out with a 9-0 run midway through the third quarter. At the end of that run, the Giants had their largest lead of the game, 33-16.

Drewry finished with seven points, eight rebounds, and a game-high four assists. Junior chipped in six points and two rebounds off the bench.

REACTION: "They played hard. We can go 12 or 13 deep, we run everybody, we're pressing, we're attacking the basket. We still have to clean up some of our breakdowns mentally, but overall I think that we're figuring it out and we're getting better." — Redwood coach .

"We got a little complacent at 12 or 13 (point lead), and that's where we really have to learn to finish teams off. We'll get there hopefully." — Compagno.
