Redwood's Mareno is All-MCAL in basketball

His Giants teammate, Kai Drewry, is selected to the all-league second team, as is girls star Lauren Toy, who like Matt Mareno is only a junior.

junior , the third-leading scorer in Marin County Athletic League boys basketball this past season, was selected to the all-league first team in a vote of the coaches.

Mareno was one of three Giants honored – two in boys basketball and one in girls. Senior and junior each garnered second-team honors in their respective divisions.

Mareno averaged 16.2 points per game, trailing only Player of the Year Stuart Wesonga of San Marin (21.5) and Mike Best of Terra Linda (19.2). The Giants star also ranked behind just those two big men in rebounding at 8.8 per game and blocked shots (2.7).

Mareno was joined on the All-MCAL first team by Best, San Marin’s Chris Glennon, Marin Catholic’s David Ahern and Drake’s Joey Euphrat.

Drewry earned his second-team selection after a season in which he led the MCAL in assists with 3.0 per game. He also was the league’s 11th-best scorer (11.4).

Toy was eighth among girls in MCAL scoring at 10.0 per game.

The All-MCAL first team for the girls featured Tam’s Jenna May, Justin-Siena’s Hailey Breakwell and Katherine Lee, Marin Catholic’s Emily Easom and San Marin’s Leeann Alferness.

Branson senior Liz Coito was selected Player of the Year.
