That Wildcat Pride

Not just faith, knowledge, and service, but pride too!

Marin Catholic High School, a co-educational school established on the basis of faith, knowledge, and service, is nestled between the Marin communities of San Anselmo and Larkspur. Known for the Catholic faith and strong academics, Marin Catholic has much to offer. I am privileged to be a part of the MC community.

Marin Catholic is my home-away-from-home. From early morning tutoring to post practice workouts, I’d say I spend more time at MC than at home. This is a school whose values are illuminated in every day life, whether they be sporting events, the arts, or beyond. This is my single-most favorite part of being a member of the community here.

Simply faith, knowledge, and service don’t cut it for me. These are some of the very few cornerstones that make up this institution.

On Dec. 10, many loyal fans gathered at the Oakland Coliseum with hopes to witness the men’s football team defeat Campolindo in the NCS final. The night started off with an incredible tail-gate in the parking lot as mothers wore their son’s jerseys, and girls carried posters and horns. The energy in the stadium was crazy, as it was touching to see the boys take the field. In the midst of all the excitement, yelling, cheering, and laughing, I took a look around me. Next to me I saw two girls who’ve disagreed for years actually hug each other on a touch down. Mothers and fathers all laughing, students coming together to cheer, everyone full of faith and hope- this is what I love about MC.

During basketball games, you would expect most of the energy to be sparked by the dance team, but usually this is not the case. More often than not, senior boys take leadership as different themes (neon night, whiteout, flannel shirt night) are set for each game, and cheers are shouted back and forth between the student fan sections of each school. In being a really big competitor in sports, I love nothing better than to spend my winter Friday nights at a home game at MC and participate in cheering on my friends and my school.

Even at a very young age in my high school life, I was taught MC pride. My freshman religion teacher was also the varsity football head coach, Mr. Ken Peralta. He insisted that we call him Coach Peralta, and instead of giving away detentions for missing assignments, he would make us do pushups. Some of us gained both knowledge and muscle in that class. We also chanted the alma mater every Friday and competed with other classes. We believed that we were always the loudest, but now here I am two years later. I heard the freshmen the other day, and boy did I laugh hard. They were terribly quiet!

It’s funny how the days pass, and you don’t seem to change at all. Then you look back on all the days and you’ve noticed that they’ve added up and you wonder where all the time went, and you realize how different you really are. I’m not even that old! I can’t wait to see how much MC as well as myself changes, but there will always be one part of me that never changes: my MC pride.
