Forward To School...

Kids' feelings about the end of summer and back to school.

Most school age kids in Marin County are back in school this week.  New backpacks, pens, pencils, and notebooks signal the end of summer and the beginning of another school year.  There will be new teachers, new classes, new classmates, and for some new school buildings or campuses.

My grandson, Evan, lives in Sacramento and his first day of 4th grade was 2 weeks ago.  When I asked him how his first day of school was, he said, “It went really well…” And when I asked him what it was like to see his friends again, he added, “…it’s fun to see my friends again…everyone looks the same from last year…”

Sofi, 9, is starting 4th grade at Bacich Elementary School.  She told me, “I’m really excited…because in 4th grade I’m going to be doing a lot of things and I’m one year older so I can do more things that I couldn’t do last year…”

She continued, “I’m going to spend 2 nights in gold country with my class and I’m going to go mining for gold in the rivers…and then another thing is that we are going to do more cool art projects…like we’re going to make paper and then we would do a cool drawing on the paper that we’ve made…”

Sofi is very excited about learning.  She told me, “I don’t think some kids think about school the way that I do…I like school…it’s interesting…my teachers have always been so detailed and they make it sound fun!”

Sofi’s exuberance about starting school, and learning in general, reminds me to always look ahead and continue to find new areas to explore and learn about.  Youthful enthusiasm does not have to be solely for the youth…it can be for all of us to stay young at heart and to continue to find joy in our lives.

When some are lamenting the end of summer, Sofi poignantly told me, “Summer’s coming around next year…(and with a chuckle she added) so I’ll have plenty of time…”

The brightness in her eyes and joy in her voice celebrated the newness of each moment and the many moments ahead…

Until next time, remember, it’s all “for the love of kids…”

In joy, Marilyn

I remember school being such a big place that it was easy to get lost, especially as a high school freshman.
