How to keep your kids safe when they're home for the summer, even if you're not.

Here are some really great tips from the Torrance Police Department on how to stay safe in the summer:

Parents should ensure that their children remain safe even while on summer vacation. Here are some tips to follow:

  • If children are home alone and are allowed to answer the phone, they should never tell the caller that they are home alone.
  • If someone knocks on the door do not open the door but let the person know someone is inside the residence. Do not let them know the child is home alone.
  • Make sure that the child has a list of phone numbers (neighbors, friends, family) that they can call if they should become frightened or in the event of an emergency.
  • Assure that they know how to call 911 and when it is appropriate to do so. Also establish a schedule for the child to check in with mom or dad.
  • Establish house rules for use of the computer, especially the Internet. The computer can be a valuable learning tool, but is not a good babysitter. Make sure the child knows never to give out personal information on the computer.
  • Your children need to wear a helmet while riding a bike, scooter, roller skates etc.
  • Teach your children that it is best to be in a group of friends when going places.
  • Parents should know the route the child will be taking to and from a given location. Remind the child never to take shortcuts or deviate from the route agreed upon.
  • Make sure that your children know never to talk to anyone that they don’t know.

Have fun a fun and safe summer!

Mike, the police work for whoever pays them through their taxes. A local PD is funded through local government. State police are funded through state taxes. Federal police from federal taxes. You can't lump all police into one pot. And, the local police set their priorities where their local politicians direct them. If you have idiots in local government, they have the police concentrate on things that may or may not be efficient or effective. Local voting could not be more important as the Chief of Police is going to follow whatever the mayor and city council instruct him/her to do. Don't like the police, vote people in that reflect your views of how the police should work. People get exactly the kind of law enforcement that they vote for and pay for.

Elvira, the cops in my town would probably pimp you for all you're worth. Luckily for you that's only about $12.73!

i wonder when this is going to turn into a debate about whether or not this is Obamas fault?

What is wrong with everybody? Do you ever realize how crazy you sound? You are responding to an article to help keep our kids safe, which I clicked on because I have 2 kids, not because I wanted to start an anti-government militia

I had posted a comment but it was deleted??? I guess because I was sticking to the point of the article: Kids should also be told NOT to cook without an adult present. Fires can start very easily, even with a toaster...I should know. I started such when I was about 5.
