ABAG, Smoking Could Heat Up Town Hall

The Corte Madera Town Council on Tuesday will take another look at its move to leave ABAG and an ordinance to ban smoking within town parks.

Corte Madera has been hailed by many for its decision to leave the Association of Bay Area Governments. Others say it was a pointless move that, at best is only ceremonial, and at worst could backfire on the town. Well, there's still a chance for the Town to change its mind and stay with ABAG since it will take nearly another 15 months for the move to take effect. "We're using that time to try to come up with a  better way to do this," Corte Madera vice-Mayor Diane Furst said in a meeting with members of the Marin Communities Coalition for Local Control. "Almost immediately after we withdrew, our One Bay Area Plan numbers came in at about half what they were bandying about, which makes it seem these numbers are random. They're not taking …

Don't Smoke In The Grass

Corte Madera's Town Council moves toward banning smoking in all town parks.

He gave up cigarettes more than a year ago, so Twin Cities Police Reserve Officer Michael Lappert won't have to worry about being busted for smoking in Town Park. There was a lively discussion Tuesday night at Corte Madera Town Hall before the Town Council voted 3-1 to introduce an ordinance that would ban smoking within town parks. Lappert was the lone dissenting vote on the Town Council. Vice-Mayor Diane Furst did not attend the meeting. Although Councilwoman Alexandra Cock voted to introduce the ordinance, she said would rather have sent it back for a rewrite, possibly with a no-smoking boundary around the parks. "So if someone is smoking in their backyard and they happen to be 4 feet away from a park, I should call (TCPA) Chief …

Policing Smoking Laws No Walk In The Park

Corte Madera to consider tougher enforcement of smoking ordinances at Tuesday's Town Council meeting.

Corte Madera received a black eye earlier this year in a report from the American Lung Association, but now a group of citizens is fighting back. They're not fighting the findings of the report. They want to give Corte Madera a kick in the butt. The Corte Madera Town Council on Tuesday will hear a proposed ordinance that would crack down on smoking within and near town parks. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall. The Corte Madera Municipal Code says smoking is prohibited "within any playground or tot lot in the town of Corte Madera." No person shall dispose of cigarette butts, cigar butts, or any other tobacco related products or waste in any playground or tot lot located in the town of Corte Madera. For the purpose of this section…

ABAG Won't Go Away Quietly

Corte Madera Town Council members will take a look at the latest predictions for job and population growth during Tuesday's meeting at Town Hall.

Corte Madera might be ready to cut ties with ABAG, but the numbers game isn't necessarily over yet. The Corte Madera Town Council voted last month to leave the Association of Bay Area Governments after balking at ABAG's first set of projected numbers for jobs and population growth for the community over the next 30 years. ABAG has since come back with a modified report that includes more modest growth predictions for Corte Madera. There is still some question from the public over how ABAG comes up with its numbers and how towns like Corte Madera can accommodate the predicted growth. ABAG will make a return appearance on the Corte Madera Town Council agenda for the Tuesday, April 17 meeting. The meeting is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. at Town …

Where Are Your Dollars Going?

The Corte Madera Town Council takes a close look at the money trail during its first mid-year budget review.

Everyone is trying to find ways to save money, and the Town of Corte Madera is no different. Many of the Town's Department heads gather in Town Hall Tuesday night to go over the Town's budget. The first budget analysis raised eyebrows as it was revealed the Corte Madera Sanitation Board expects to spend nearly $2.5 million over the next three years on emergency repairs to the sewer lines.

See How The Numbers Add Up

In the spirit of tax season, the Corte Madera Town Council takes a mid-year look at its budget.

If you like numbers, or need a primer in investments, payroll and budget then you might want to grab a seat and hang on tight for Tuesday's Corte Madera Town Council meeting. Once the Town Council gets through the consent calendar items, which include payroll and investments, it's time for a mid-year budget review. Does this sound mind-numbingly boring? Why should you care? Here's the simple answer: If the playground at your favorite park needs some fresh sand, take a look at the budget to see if the money's there. If your community program is being cut or cut back, take a look at the budget to see why. In any good detective story, you have to follow the money trail. There might be no hidden mystery here, but you might find out a thing or …

Town Council Must Iron Out Details

Now that Corte Madera has decided to allow the keeping of bees and chickens, the council has to fine tune a few details.

In case you missed the excitement of the last Corte Madera Town Council meeting — and believe me, you missed a lot — you can get a few highlights during the next meeting, Tuesday, March 20. The Town Council will iron out some details regarding an amendment to allow the keeping of bees and chickens in residential areas. The council will also begin looking at alternatives to ABAG, since the town fled from the Association of Bay Area Governments. The Marin County Board of Supervisors will look at ABAG and the latest Regional Housing Needs Allotment numbers at its meeting at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

In ecology, sustainability describes how biological systems remain diverse and productive over time, a necessary precondition for human…   more ›
