Recipe Of The Week: Applesauce With Honey

Gravenstein Apple season brings so many tasty possibilities, including applesauce and apple pie.

You don't have to go to Sebastopol to get a preview of the annual Gravenstein Apple Fair. This weekend, the apples are coming to you.

Farmer Paul of Nana Mae Organics, for one, is bringing the organic apples to the Marin Country Mart Farmers' Market on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. So, you can get whole apples, apple juice, or apple sauce. Another person offering tasty apple treats is Kendra, Farmer Paul's wife. Try the Gravenstein Apple Fromage a Trois grilled cheese from the Farmer's Wife booth.

Visit your local farmers market and conduct a taste test between plums, apricots and pluots to see which one you like best. Check out the Larkspur farmers market at Marin Country Mart every Saturday, from 9 a.m. to noon, and the Corte Madera farmers market at the Town Center every Wednesday, from noon to 5 p.m.

6 Gravenstein apples

1/4 cup water

1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

3 tablespoons honey

pinch of salt

Preparation: Peel and core the apples and slice them into bite-sized chunks. Place the apple chunks in a pot along with the water. Turn the heat to medium and cover the pot. Cook until the apples soften and mash with the back of a spoon. Add in the honey and cinnamon, and cook for 10 minutes longer to allow the flavors to meld together.
