Wide Eyed Wonder

Scott the Storyteller spins tales at the Saturday morning Marin Country Mart Farmers Market

As the sun was peeking through the clouds on a fall morning at the Marin Country Mart Farmers Market, about 20 children gathered to hear Scott the Storyteller.  Scott’s homegrown stories are embellished with a multitude of puppets and Scott’s bevy of fun puppet voices.

There were colorful child-sized beanbags in red, yellow, orange, purple and blue for kids to sit on while cozying up to enjoy a morning of fun and engaging stories.  Young eyes were fixed on Scott’s puppets and giggles filled the air.  Between stories children were heard saying, “…more, more…how about the one about the elephant and the giraffe…how about the one about the chicken…”

Twins, Hugh and Stu, 5, from Mill Valley enjoyed Scott’s show.  Stu liked the puppets and Hugh, “…liked the story about the chicken!”  They were eager to pose for a picture holding their signed picture of Scott.

Scott, 6, from Massachusetts, is visiting his uncle and cousins in Marin County and was happy to have come to the Farmers Market to enjoy the storytelling.  He liked, “…the guy’s (Scott) voices…and I liked the lion story…”  He continued on to tell me, “I like doing my homework, playing on my iPod and playing on my computer.”  He gave a big smile as he posed for a picture.

As brothers Matthew, 6, and Peter, 4 ½, were enjoying a juicy apple from the Farmers Market, Matthew told me, “I liked the story about the chicken…when the chicken sprayed the bees and then all of the bees stinged his stomach…”  Peter added, “me too.”

After the performance Scott’s young fans gathered around him as he signed pictures of himself for each of them to take home.  Children were excited to receive their colorful picture of Scott and his puppet friends.  As they gazed at their new treasure a smile grew on their faces.

When I asked Scott why he enjoys being a children’s storyteller, he told me, “It’s what I get back from the kids…what I see in their faces…the smile, the laughter…being able to draw out those emotions and see the wonder in their eyes…”

There were a lot of smiles, laughter and eyes filled with wonder on this fun filled fall  Saturday morning at the Marin Country Mart Farmers Market.

Until next Wednesday, remember, it’s all “for the love of kids…”

In joy, Marilyn
