Sheriff Cracks Down On 'Non-Resident Solicitors' On Wolfe Grade

Officers are seeing a connection between burglaries and unlicensed, or improperly licensed, door-to-door salespeople.

The Marin County Sheriff's Department, responding to a number of home and auto burglaries in the county, cracked down on reported door-to-door salespeople who didn't have proper licenses on Wolfe Grade on Thursday.

Sheriff's Sgt. Jim Hicke indicated officials have seen a connection between "non-resident solicitors" and burglaries in the area. Hicke said homeless children are recruited from other states and shipped to California to peddle magazine subscriptions, vacuum cleaners and more, but are not always licensed to sell goods within city or county limits. Buyers don't always receive their orders, ending up with an empty pocket and a hard-learned lesson. Sometimes, not always, these solicitors target unlocked cars and steal bikes, spare change, etc.

Hicke said there are licensed and reputable door-to-door salespeople operating in the area. Ask to see a solicitor's license and, if you sense something is wrong, call the police or sheriff's office.
